Tuscany
The home of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, important
reference point for fashion and land of the most extraordinary culinary
experiences: Tuscany speaks to the world through the richness of its historical
past, of its culture and of its romantic periods.
Situated in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is pure magic! Landscapes which
will take your breath away with vineyards, olive groves and gentle
hills which together paint the picture of its well-known countryside. Florence is
stupendous and renowned, but there are many more realities waiting to be discovered.
Tuscany is one of the few European regions which can boast cities
which date back three millennia like Artimino, Arezzo, Fiesole, Volterra and Cortona,
land of the first Etruscan settlements from around 1000 B.C.
The Romans from the IIIrd century B.C. contributed to further
cultural and economic development of our lovely region, a process already
started by the Etruscans, by increasing the number of public works and
the building of the roads network. One important example is the Pilgrims'
way called "Francigena" or "Romea", enriched
by the beautiful abbeys which can still be visited.
Around 1400 A.D. sees the emergence of some of Tuscany's principal
cities such as Pisa, Siena, Pistoia and Arezzo but above all Florence, "birthplace
of the Italian language". It's with the Rennaissance that
Tuscany becomes the cradle of many ideas and inventions, and the focal point
in Europe as a centre of culture thanks to the founding of various Universities
and Literary Academies, the best-known of which is without doubt the Crusca.
Since then, passing through the Unification of Italy (1859) and the founding
of the Italian Republic (1946) to the present day, Tuscany has given birth
to illustrious people who have made enormous contributions to the political
and cultural life of Italy. For all these reasons, a journey through Tuscany
is a marvellous occasion to feel oneself in contact with a past which is
still so alive in our times.
